Although mechanical hardware is and always will be a core part of our business, the future of our company – and the entire security industry – lies in addressing the needs of an increasingly connected world. The security challenges of tomorrow require intelligent products and solutions that can be easily monitored, controlled and accessed with the push of a button or a tap of the smartphone. That’s why we intend to make a significant investment in the electronic side of our business moving forward, all while maintaining our same level of dedication to the continuous improvement and advancement of our mechanical products.
Electronic solutions don’t replace our mechanical products – they make them more powerful. When it comes to securing openings and protecting people, electronic solutions give our customers greater knowledge, speed, efficiency, and control when integrated with existing hardware. For example, our electronic locks can be remotely controlled to initiate a“lockdown” of an entire building and provide a visual indication to those inside that they are safe. At the same time, these electronic locks work in tandem with our mechanical exit devicesso that people can still get out quickly and safely if the situation changes. In the case of fire safety, containment is critical to minimizing damage and harm. An electronic fire control system can be linked to our door hardware so that all doors are closed immediately to prevent the spread of a fire – and our panic release bars let people out in an instant, if necessary.
With more advanced and automated electronic solutions, people can monitor who passesthrough a particular door at a certain time – and remotely control when and who can access an opening. We recently worked with Villanova University in Pennsylvania to provide a complete access control transformation, upgrading much of the campus to a keyless entry system using Schlage® electronic locks and aptiQ smart credentials. Instead of using keys, students can now use their smartphone to gain access to dorms and academic buildings, purchase books at the campus bookstore, and even do laundry. The best part is that the university can program and manage everything electronically.
We can extend the same kind of sophisticated electronic solutions to the home. Thanks to our systems, homeowners can lock and unlock their doors from virtually anywhere, providing temporary access to the dog walker or the plumber. Parents can know with confidence that their kids are safely home when they receive an automatic text message that tells them their children have arrived.
We collaborate with others to develop total safety and security solutions. Our partnership with Schindler makes moving about buildings more convenient and efficient. Elevators operated by Schindler determine the quickest possible route to requested floors. And our eVAYO electronic locks are smartly connected to the elevator system so that entrancesare automatically unlocked whenauthorized personsarriveat their doors.
We’ve made significantstrides in integrating electronic offerings into the core of our business. But we’ve only begun to scratch the surface of what we can and will do.We will seek to expand our core capabilities beyond the doorway to include more fully integrated security solutions. We will look for smart, strategic acquisitions that complement and enhance our existing offerings. We will continue to pursue organic growth in emerging markets. We will ramp up our investment in R&D and product development. We’ll harness the power and passion of our 7,600 global employees who, day-in and day-out, put our customers at the center of everything they do. Most importantly, we’ll challenge conventional thinking and embody a level of energy and innovation that attracts top talent to our company.
An industry-wide shift to more digital, mobile and interconnected security solutions requires thoughtful leadership to ensure that safety and security standards are always evolving and improving. Our global footprint gives us a responsibility to engage with local authorities to raise safety and security standards everywhere.
